Termination of civil partnerships
-
-
The status of a registered civil partnership between two partners of the same sex bestows on them virtually the same rights and duties that attach to a heterosexual marriage.
-
-
The similarity extends to the termination of the relationship which can be done only by the court by a procedure and on grounds virtually the same as divorce. The only differences of substance are that adultery is not a ground for dissolving a registered same-sex partnership and a decree of nullity cannot be obtained on the grounds of non-consummation.
Registered Civil Partnerships cannot be terminated until a period of one year has elapsed since the date of registration.
