The Licensing Act requires that "Theatrical Performances" only take place if a Temporary Events Notice has been given or a Premises Licence obtained from the local council. There are very severe penalities for holding a play without an authorisation.

The term "Theatrical Performance" is in some ways a little misleading, as it covers everything from a performance of one of Shakepear's plays to a battle reinactment to a Punch and Judy show.
