The House of Lords has granted a terminally ill woman the right to have the Director of Public Prosecutions provide clarification of the circumstances in which a relative of someone who wishes to end their life will be prosecuted under the Suicide Act 1961 if they travel with the person wishing to die to a country where assisted suicide is legal.
No prosecutions have yet been brought under the Act but the uncertainty about the position has led some people to travel overseas alone rather than risk their relatives being prosecuted for assisting them. Now, the Director of Public Prosecutions will publish interim guidance by the end of September 2009. This will be followed by a period of public consultation with a final policy statement to be issued in spring 2010
